Why discount airline tickets are no longer cheap

I’ve been amazed at the how much discount airline tickets cost these days. Our newspaper recently ran an ad from one of the major airlines promoting a very nice cheap airfare from Denver to Mazatlan. Very nice and cheap, that is, until the fees get tacked on. There is a fee for each airport we step foot in (Denver, Phoenix, and Mazatlan, times two), plus a federal tax, plus a security fee, plus a fee to leave the country and other tax to come back into the country (didn’t I pay for that when I bought my passport and paid my income tax?).  In the end, just the taxes made the tickets over 50% more expensive.
