Did you see that blur of feathers?

Nope. I saw a yellow bellied sapsucker.  And I laughed at him. I thought he was pulling my leg.  There was no such thing. But then I was in 9th grade and he was the professional naturalist, so maybe it was true. 

When I asked him how he knew that so quickly, like a good teacher, he told me it was the mark of field experience to learn to look for clues and assemble the puzzle before it flies away.  And told me to “look it up” in one of the Bird Guides back at the office to see for myself what I had missed.
