Price of Pet Medication Forces Elderly to Choose Between Their Medication and Their Pets’ Meds
After I graduated from veterinary school, I went back to my home town to open my practice. It is a small town and experienced economic problems long before the current crisis. There is a large number of elderly people living here and many of them have a difficult time making ends meet. It is heartbreaking to see them bring old dogs and cats into the office and try to decide who needs their medication more, them or their pets. I charge them very little for my services, but I at least have to recoup the price I paid for the Pet Meds. Some animal medications are almost as costly as human medications, causing many elderly people to give up their pets. This is a terrible solution for everyone concerned. Pets are an important part of an elderly person’s life and no one should have to decide between keeping a pet and buying their medication.
